More exhibition piece than short film, Os Elementos Do Verbo uses a poem by the director's Brazilian great-grandfather, Cauby Cruz (1928-1975), to create an organic filmic environment made up of fragments of text, sound, and image. Rather than narrative, we focus on textures, sounds, gestures, and landscapes; intimations of the filmmaker's own inner world. Cauby Cruz was part of the Grupo dos Novos, a Brazilian modernist movement that emerged after the Second World War, and the piece is partially a way of connecting with the filmmaker's own Brazilian history and identity.
